KIDS From Wisconsin set to amaze audiences - again

We enjoyed a sneak peek into the KIDS From Wisconsin concerts thanks to Executive Director Tina Weiss. Weiss, who visited us on May 10, says this year's concert will be a "musical journey across the US." Playing off the theme of "Heading Out On The Highway," songs will reflect the destinations for which they are best known: Cleveland (Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame), Nashville (country), New Orleans (jazz), Las Vegas (show tunes) and New York (big band era), among others. Artists whose work will be performed include Willie Nelson, John Denver, Celine Dion, Elvis, ZZ Top, Journey and Tom Jones. They also will perform selections from the movie "La La Land."

More than 400 young performers auditioned this year, Weiss says, from which they selected the 35 KIDS.

The KIDS From Wisconsin have a new producer, only its third in the storied group's nearly 50-year history. Taras Nahirniak joined KIDS in 1990 as rehearsal accompanist. He currently is choral director, a position he has held throughout most of his career. An accomplished arranger and composer, Nahirniak has written music for vocal groups, drum corps, and marching bands in the U.S., Europe and Japan. Nahirniak's work has been performed by the Madison Symphony Orchestra and Madison Ballet.

New this year will be mini-concerts during intermission. One or more band members will perform in the lobby, Weiss says. Also, audience members will enjoy a "seamless" concert. There will be no stopping and starting between songs.

"It'll be a great show," Weiss says. "We're very excited."
