Lending a hand to feed the needy

New Berlin Rotarians joined numerous other volunteers at the New Berlin Food Pantry Dec. 1 to sort and stack the hundreds of items donated that day. Thanks to residents of the Weatherstone subdivision in New Berlin, the food pantry's shelves and bins netted approximately 3,300 lbs. of food items.

The Weatherstone food drive has been a regular feature for approximately 30 years, according to Barb Jacobs of the food pantry. It is the second largest food drive of the year, trailing only the Postal Service collection in May. "We really count on it," she said, adding that the collection should cover them until the Postal Service drive.

A Weatherstone resident, Jacobs has high praise for her neighbors. "It's a good community effort. Put out the call, and they respond."

In addition to the three Rotarians, nearly 15 workers from New Berlin-based Gamay Food Ingredients joined in the fun.

The New Berlin Food Pantry serves needy residents of New Berlin, Elm Grove and Brookfield each Wednesday. For more information, call 262-789-8040.
